1. Bar soap makes skin sensitive forever

Have you ever used bar soap on your face when you weren't using a cleanser, or were you just too lazy to find a more suitable soap in the shower? This is a sign that you should stop.

Dr Shukla says: ' Bar soap has an alkaline pH while your skin has an acidic pH. As a result, it breaks down the skin's moisture barrier and causes many skin problems like dryness and flaking, which can make your skin permanently sensitive ' .

2. The product contains kerosene ingredients

If you apply petroleum - based products to your skin in cold weather, you are setting yourself up for skin problems. According to Shukla , you shouldn't use kerosene on your face because it creates a very thick layer on your skin and that can again cause various problems. People with oily skin may experience more breakouts.

To properly moisturize your skin, choose a moisturizer or a lightweight moisturizer that penetrates your skin. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid when shopping for a moisturizer. Dr. Shukla does not recommend using kerosene on your skin unless you are suffering from intense flaking and skin problems like eczema.

3. Toothpaste can damage the skin

Applying toothpaste on the face has emerged as a cure for viral acne and has taken the world by storm . However, applying toothpaste to your face could be the worst skin care mistake you are making. Spot treatment of acne with toothpaste can sometimes burn the skin, due to the presence of chemicals that are not suitable for the skin.

' Toothpaste can't stop acne breakouts. Sometimes it can dry out acne but also leave bad marks on your face. It is important for you to understand that a dermatologist's opinion is best when you are concerned about your condition ' . Dr. Shukla said.

4. Alcohol can break down the skin barrier

Alcohol is something that isn't meant for the surface of your skin. If you rub your skin with alcohol, it can make it drier and more sensitive, or lead to other skin problems. According to Dr. Shukla, ' The application of alcohol can disrupt the skin barrier. So you're better off limiting alcohol to your skin '.

5. Body lotion is not suitable for facial skin

Have you used body cream and applied it all over your face and neck? You have to stop because the skin is much thinner . No matter what a body cream looks like with a facial moisturizer, it 's still not something made for your face .

Usually body lotions contain heavier ingredients like butter and oils , this formula does n't stick well on your face. These heavier ingredients can aggravate skin problems like acne.
